Should we bomb ISIS in Syria? *Official war thread*
Much as I think that Corbyn is a dreamy romantic in general, including on foreign policy, I can't help but think that his warning, that we haven't learnt from past mistakes, should be heeded.
Paris, Mali, Tunisia, the Russian plane in Sinai - all extremely provocative, and naturally we feel that ISIS must be exterminated, just as we felt that certain nasty people in Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan deserved to be sorted out.
But just chucking bombs will not do the job. Ground troops and long term commitment are needed, if we want to secure a lasting peace. Our experience of arming the "least worst" bunch of native militias has backfired whenever it has been tried.

Re: Should we bomb ISIS in Syria?
I was thinking about this over the last couple of days. My immediate reaction is "bomb the hell out of them"

However, the more I think about it, the more I'm not sure.

If I lived a few doors down from gangster hitman, would I grass him up to the old bill and stand up in court to testify against him, or I would I let him crack on in the knowledge that my other neighbours are already trying to force him out?

It may sound cowardice (and it is), but I would bury my head in the sand and let someone else worry about it. Why make myself a target by getting involved with someone that, to date, has largely left me alone?

The focus from ISIS is on the countries that are publically and directly harming them (France / Russia etc). I absolutely understand both sides of the argument, and you can argue the toss both ways quite easily, but I'd be tempted to leave this alone for 12 months and see how it plays out. Now Russia are involved they wont lay down lightly, so I'm not sure what difference it would make to the overall picture if Britain started bombing too.

I know this post will probably get a cunting, but the more I think about it, the more I think we should let the others get on with it and support from a distance.

In no way a Corbyn supporter .......,.....BUT

I do not think us bombing Syria is the greatest idea.

I'd much prefer our efforts and focus to be on Homeland security and root out the tossers up to no good in our midst.

Re: Should we bomb ISIS in Syria?
Andy,

You should be ashamed with that mind set.

The gutless and cowardly way this country has has bent over backwards for years to accomodate the very people that are now our enemy just goes to prove that burying your head in the sand makes things even worse.

We need to rise up and sort these people out and anyone residing in the UK with this beliefs should be punished for treason and thrown into the sea.

Re: Should we bomb ISIS in Syria?
If we learn from past mistakes then it should be that bombing doesn't work. It didn't bring London to its knees in 1941, it didn't work in Spain, nor in Vietnam, Cambodia... add your own war. Ground troops will be needed at some time but nobody has the taste for that. Difficult times and very difficult decisions.

Billy.... it worked in japan in 1945

Andy

You do realise that you are already a target and we haven't even bombed Syria yet.If our forefathers had had your thoughts we'd all be talking German now.

Re: Should we bomb ISIS in Syria?
we're already bombing ISIS in Iraq. Do you think they think that's alright as long as we don't bomb over a border that they dont recognise themselves?

Glenn Rodent 7:22 Mon Nov 23
Re: Should we bomb ISIS in Syria?
People dont have the taste for it because of fear.

You should never live in fear. If you live in fear then you are not really living.

In 1934 the leaders of the world were warned about Hitler and did fuck all until it was too late the same WILL happen again if we're not careful

I'm up for killing as many of them as possible.

As long as we kill the ones here too. It's the only language they understand.

Nuke Raqqa and then fuck the rest of them off out of this country whether they were born here or not

Re: Should we bomb ISIS in Syria?
We should do to Raqqa what we did to Dresden. But there is a bigger picture. We must immediately prevent anyone from leaving Syria. ISIS is made up mostly of Saddam's elite army which slunk away when they were attacked. They will do the same again if they haven't already done so and an obvious plan would be to join the refugee trail to Europe. There are already 700000 Muslims in this country who are on their side, so immigration into Europe must stop immediately.

Re: Should we bomb ISIS in Syria?
Just for starters yes, ground troops from somewhere will be needed though as people have a habit of moving around when being bombed.

I would really rather we didn't.

Re: Should we bomb ISIS in Syria?
As far as I can remember we weren't bombing ISIS, certainly not in Syria when they decapitated Alan Henning and David Haines and again as far as I can remember Japan weren't bombing them when the two Japanese hostages were murdered.

It's wishful thinking if we expect ISIS to go quiet and stop becoming a threat to us and our allies if we just "leave them be". In fact "leaving them be" to an extent has put us in the position we find ourselves in now.

Can you imagine how World War II would have gone if we had all just left the Nazis to it declaring that it was nothing to do with us?

Certainly just bombing them won't defeat them on it's own but if it achieves the goal of weakening them enough so that when ground troops are sent in our forces will meet less resistance and therefore our forces would have less casualties in the event of a land war then I'm all for it.

Re: Should we bomb ISIS in Syria?
No and that has fuck all to do with living in fear of home grown islamist nutjobs (who were around long before the arab spring)

Not our war, no real valued interests and we would be going full circle like the rest and fighting side by side with a regime we were all set to fight against not just a few years back

Americas long term goals in the middle east are a huge financial incentive for them to be playing such an active role. What we would gain from simply moving along the current crop of radical jihadist nutters to the next region of the world is minimal at best

bruuuno 7:42 Mon Nov 23
Re: Should we bomb ISIS in Syria?
No. One of the main reasons I say that is because I think it would be a symbolic act that would achieve basically nothing except improve Cameron's popularity and make us a target for terror attacks.

I just don't believe we have the intelligence on the ground to find the targets. If we did then it would be a different story and would involve sending at least a couple of brigades in on foot which aint gonna happen.

I remmeber seeing footage from RAF tornadoes in Syria and that footage was of them blowing up a car... Fucking woopy.

'Airstrikes' just aren't as effective as everyone believes.

Sorry to be a realist.
